Real People...Real Stories

Many people believe in angels, but we are fortunate to actually know one, and he answers to the name Ethan.

Ethan is a young patient of ours who was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy or SMA Type 1. The role of BioMetrics is to help Ethan maintain his range of motion and prevent contractures (tightening of the muscles into a permanently misaligned shape). Ethan uses AFOs (Ankle Foot Orthotics) when seated, KFOs (Knee Foot orthotics) to prevent his legs from buckling when in his Stander and to help keep his legs straight through the night, a TLSO back brace to support his torso, and WHFOs (Wrist Hand Finger Orthotics) a few hours a day to keep his hands flexible for his many activities. He loves to shake his maraca and play the drums!

SMA is a rare genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 6,000 babies born and is the number one genetic killer of children under the age of 2. It is a recessive genetic trait meaning both parents must be carriers. SMA effects muscles throughout the body, and can greatly impact breathing. To help him maintain his strength, Ethan gets PT, OT and speech therapy, along with respiratory therapy throughout the day.

SMA presents many challenges, all greeted by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and a constantly expanding circle of supporters with great determination and energy. Ethan has many physical needs but at his core he’s just a bright little boy who wants to have fun! Ethan loves The Wiggles, Clifford, being read to, music, playing instruments, Sesame Street, kicking a ball around, his best pal Billy - the list goes on and on.

Adaptive technology has allowed Ethan to start using a computer, and special switches enable him to control many of his own toys. It’s a joy to watch him play independently because he really enjoys himself and takes great pride in doing things on his own.

We are proud to be a part of Ethan’s team, and appreciate the trust his family have placed in us as they battle SMA. It’s a tough fight, but one they are determined to win.
