Real People...Real Stories Southern Connecticut State University is a school with about 12,000 students. Odds are, if you’re a student there or spend time on campus, you know Philip. Philip is a 20 year old who at age 2 was struck by Luco Encephalitis meaning “inflammation of the brain.” As a result, he wears custom made lower extremity orthoses. Thanks to his braces, Philip is able to stand independently and navigate his way around campus using a walker. His use of a mobility device like a walker in no ways impedes his active social or academic life. Philip is preparing to graduate with a degree in Special Education and plans to teach at the High School level. Having a good understanding of his body has assisted Philip in staying fit. In what serves as great inspiration to those who know him, Philip displays his discipline and commitment to his health by walking a mile in his dorm each day. Another good example of Philip’s determination is how although right handed, he switched to playing guitar with his left hand due to dexterity issues. On campus, Philip works as an RA (Resident Assistant) in his dorm, and will be working as a Conference Assistant over the summer. His next step professionally is to become a graduate intern. On the personal front, his main life goal is to have a family of his own. So, if it’s a nice day out and you happen to be on campus, you’ll probably see Philip out enjoying the day and soaking up some sunshine. The last place you’ll find him on a nice day is sitting around inside. We know when his time on campus is done, he’s going to be a great teacher to some very lucky students. |
